General Introduction
    Susanto Rahardja received the B.Eng. degree from National University of Singapore in 1991, the M.Eng. and Ph.D. degrees from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, in 1993 and 1997 respectively. He is currently a Chair Professor at the Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU) under the Thousand Talent Plan of People’s Republic of China. Prior joining NPU, he was the Director of Advanced Technology Centre at Infocomm Development Authority in Singapore, the Head of Signal Processing Department, the Deputy Executive Director (Research) at the Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R) as well as a Principal  Scientist II at I2R in Agency for Science, Technology and Research, Singapore. His research interests are in multimedia signal processing, machine learning and discrete transforms. He contributed to the development of an audio compression technology in which the patented technology was adopted was adopted in normative international standards ISO/IEC 14496-3:2005/Amd.3:2006, in which it has been licensed to  several companies. He also contributed technologies to China Audio Video Standards AVS-L, AVS-2 and ISO/IEC 14496-3:2005/Amd.2:2006. Dr Rahardja has published more than 300 internationally refereed    journals and conference papers. He has more than 15 years of experience in leading research team for multimedia related research that cover areas in Signal Processing (audio coding, video/image processing), Media Analysis (text/speech, image, video), Media Security (biometrics, computer vision and surveillance) and Sensor Networks.
    Dr Rahardja was the Associate Editors for IEEE Transactions on Audio, Speech and Language Processing and IEEE Transactions on Multimedia (2007-2011), Editorial Board member of APSIPA Transactions on Signal and Information Processing (2012-2015) as well as a Senior Editor of the IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Signal Processing (2013-2015). He is currently serving as Associate Editor for the Elsevier Journal of Visual Communication and Image Representation and also the IEEE Transactions on Multimedia. He was the Conference Chair of 5th ACM SIGGRAPHASIA in 2012 and APSIPA 2nd Summit and Conference in  2010 as well as other conferences in ACM, SPIE and IEEE. Dr Rahardja was the recipients of numerous awards, including the IEE Hartree Premium Award in 2002, the Tan Kah Kee Young Inventors’ Open Category Gold award in 2003, the National Technology Award in 2007, A*STAR Most Inspiring Mentor Award in 2008, Finalist of the 2010 World Technology & Summit Award, the 2012 Nokia Foundation Visiting Professor Award, the ACM Recognition of Service Award in 2013, as well as other awards. He was the Chair of SIGGRAPH Singapore Chapter (SSC), Member of the Management Board of Interactive Digital Media Institute at the National University of Singapore, Council member of National IT Standards Committee in Singapore, the Chairman of International Advisory and Scientific Board of BeingThere Center at the Nanyang Technological University, and Board of Governor and Vice President (Conference) of the Asia-Pacific Signal and Information Processing Association (APSIPA).
    Professor Rahardja was an adjunct Full Professor at the National University of Singapore and is currently holding an Adjunct Full Professor at Zhejiang University in China, Kasetsart University in Thailand, and Title of Docent from University of Eastern Finland. He attended the Stanford Executive Program at the Graduate School of Business in Stanford University (USA) in 2012. He is a Fellow of IEEE.
